Book review: "The Future of 3D Media"
In his new book, "The Future of 3D Media, Bringing Stereoscopic 3D to Consumers", Keith Fredericks manages to give a good, general overview of 3D displays without having to delve into the overly technical or the arcane. Mr. Fredericks makes a strong case that 3D in the home, whether by traditional cable TV or via the internet, will not become popular until glasses free displays with acceptable quality become commonplace, which he argues is not that far off. Star Wars in 3D? Really?
With the announcement that the "Star Wars" series is going to be converted and re-released in 3D, I have to wonder, why? The "Star Wars" films are legendary. I remember being awestruck watching the first film (episode IV) in the theater. They helped to usher in a new type of big event picture, films that were grand spectacles without being epic narratives. And like other trend setting films, their popularity has endured through generations of people. Kiss Me, Kate
Just back from a rare screening of Kiss Me Kate in 3D. The 1953 film was originally shot in 3D using a side by side dual 35mm format that never really took off, and I don't know that it was ever really released in this format. The film print we saw was definitely showing it's age, but the 3D was really pretty good through most of the film. More of a loss are the cuts made to the song lyrics by sensors to meet the production code in force at the time. It would be a wonderful thing to see this film restored,…
